BEHIND THE SCENES BREAKDOWN: Paperman - Disney's NEW short film

Paperman is the latest and much-praised short from Walt Disney Animation Studios, which will be shown in front of the studios newest animated feature, Wreck-It Ralph, opening early next month.
It is an exciting time to be working in the animation medium. The short was created using a fascinating blend of computer-generated and hand-drawn animation techniques, utilizing a new Disney in-house technology called Meander, a vector based drawing tool that gives the artist a lot of power to manipulate the drawn line.
Director John Kahrs (Tangled, Toy Story 2, The Incredibles,...) says...

"We brought together as best we could the expressiveness of 2D drawing immersed with the stability and dimensionality of CG. It really goes back to working with Glen Keane on Tangled, watching him draw over all the images."

"... We discovered that he (Brian Whited) was programming this thing and building this software – and we just totally took it over, hijacked him and his program and got him on the project.  It’s not like a texture map.  It’s just like painting on the surface of the CG. It actually moves on a 2d layer that’s driven by the CG.  And the greatest thing about the tool is that all of that drawing is right up front with the hand drawn animator; right there in their space so they can see what they’re doing."

"... I loved Tangled – and I feel like we’re in a golden age right now with CG – all the studios today are competing with a stylized form of realism.  I have to believe that’s not the only way that animation can look. I feel like 2D needs to come into the place where it can compete with a big blockbuster movie that has tons of cg and so forth.  We have to push the processes and techniques and see where we can take them."

A video has been released showing a breakdown of this new technique and technology in action, check it out...

GREAT INTERVIEW: Genndy Tartakovsky - Hotel Transylvania

"Hotel Transylvania sets record for biggest September opening of all time!"

Best known for the Cartoon Network's animated TV series Star Wars: Clone Wars, Samurai Jack, and Dexter's Laboratory, Animator/Director/Producer Genndy Tartakovsky talks about his feature film Directing debut on Sony Pictures Animation's  Hotel Transylvania...

  Enjoy!

LA Times - Genndy Tartakovsky on making Hotel Transylvania:
“I took all the aesthetics I like from 2-D and applied them here. I don’t want to do animation to mimic reality. I want to push reality. You want to have your own identity. You don’t want to have an expression that Pixar has. That was super important to me. In 2-D, the way you draw defines you, but in CG the computer takes away your identity. I wanted to make sure the movie had my point of view.”

Cartoon Brew - on Hotel Transylvania:
“... it’s time for Hollywood’s CG features to evolve – and it looks like it will take a cartoonist to blaze that trail. I like what Genndy is bringing to the table – a sense of style and humor that pushes (however slightly) what a modern day animated feature can be. It’s a small refreshing step in a exciting direction – and I look forward to seeing where this could go.”

1 in 5 teens will experiment with art: KNOW THE WARNING SIGNS OF ART!!!

Love this parody ad campaign by Team Detroit, done for the College for Creative Studies.

Believe-it-or-not teenagers aren't stupid.  So when Team Detroit was recruited to create an ad campaign, for the CCS, they decided rather than out-spend the competition, they would out-think them instead.  The result is a pitch-perfect parody of anti-drug PSAs, right down to the overly-dramatic, obviously posed photos of gravely serious family situations.  Hehehe... great fun, done with style and a sense of humor.

Then something unexpected happened:
"After we created this series of low-tech posters, something amazing happened. They went viral. People started sharing them though blogs, Facebook and Twitter. People chuckled, then passed them along to their friends. Who knew you could blow up the Internet with a campaign full of print material?"

Behind the Scenes: SyFy's TASMANIAN DEVILS

"Six daredevil friends break the rules and BASE jump into a remote area of Tasmania - where another group of, mutant, devils is waiting for them when they land."

I recently completed some CG-Creature-Animation on a upcoming SyFy Channel creature-feature movie called Tasmanian Devils, starring Danica McKellar and Kenneth Mitchell, directed by Zach Lipovsky.  Here is a look at some behind-the-scenes footage of the live-action shoot... Enjoy the videos...

Tasmanian Devils BTS - Day 9:  Behind the scenes with Danica McKellar.

Tasmanian Devils BTS - Day 10:  Exploding a helicopter on the set of Tasmanian Devils...

Tasmanian Devils BTS - Day 14:  Blood explosion into a helicopter on the set of Tasmanian Devils.   You know it's going to be good when the call is "3... 2... 1... Splat!"
Tasmanian Devils BTS - Day 15:  A closer look at one of the visual effects shots from Syfy's Tasmanian Devils.  In this shot Roger Cross is pulled out of a helicopter, while pulling the camera back to create the illusion of him falling out. All shot in slow-motion.

So needless to say... there will be some explosions, and all of our heroes may not quite survive to the end.  Of course all this footage will be amped up in post-production, composited, CG creatures added, and color corrected.  I look forward to seeing how it all turns out.

Starring Cast:
... and a bunch of giant-mutant-Tasmanian Devils  ^__^
