Pixar Before Pixar

These days we take CGI for granted, with almost every modern movie, and video game full of spectacular digital effects, and animation.  Here is footage showing where it all began.
In 1972 Ed Catmull (founder of Pixar) and his colleagues created the world’s first 3D rendered movie, an animated version of Ed’s left hand. This is the film that they produced. It includes some “making of” footage (around 1:30) and some other early experiments.  The CGI footage would later be featured in the 1976 Sci-Fi feature film Futureworld.  It would be another 33 years before the first feature length film made entirely with CGI, Toy Story, would come to theaters in 1995.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TEAM FORTRESS! ... Your videos are awesome!

Team Fortress turned 15 this past week.  Team Fortress is a team- and class-based online multiplayer video game mod based on id Software's Quake. Team Fortress was designed and written by Robin Walker, John Cook and Ian Caughley in 1996.  The mod's gameplay has caught on with a large following of fans... which spawned the much beloved, hysterical, senselessly, cartoon violent animated shorts:

(NOTE: For those interested... Team Fortress 2 is now FREE to play... FOREVER...)

Meet the Team Animated Shorts:
TF2 started with nine mercenaries, each with his own distinct personality. Because they live inside a frantic multiplayer shooter, though, the only facets of those personalities people got to see were the screaming, shooting, and being-on-fire parts. Enter the Meet the Team shorts, showcasing the mercs in their off-hours—arguing with their parents, barking orders at their head collections, or just strumming a guitar by the campfire... Also they made a movie about a sandwich.
