Looky who is in NYC TIMESSSSSSS

This is cool.

Jessica Borutski, one of my former students (from back in the day when I taught some courses at Algonquin College for a few years) , has been popping up in the news lately for her redesign of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and other iconic WB characters for a NEW animated TV series "The Looney Tunes Show" --- headed toward Cartoon Network this fall; for which she was sought out, and recruited by Warner Brothers, to be the Lead Character Designer.

Here is the New York Times article:

In an interview with Canadian Animation Resources, Jessica says, "I love the solidness of Jones’ drawings but the proportions of Clampett’s characters. I don’t like the late 50’s and early 60’s Chuck Jones’ cartoons, where Bugs and Daffy became tall and thin with broad shoulders. I really wanted to give them a more 1940’s proportion, but keeping it fresh by adding a more stylistic line quality and simplified shapes. I wish I could show you some but I’d be in big trouble. (:"

When Warner Bros broke the news online --- there was an initial reaction to the new TV series where some startled haters on the web lashed out by posting some nasty comments aimed at Borutski,... BUT... I think sanity has slowly returned and there seems to be a more of a "wait and see" approach now.  AND BESIDES THAT don't be aiming any nasty comments at Jessica, she's just doin' her job (silly people).

Attempts at revitalizing any number of beloved, old franchises is now the norm.  Some attempts end up not working so much, and some... some are AWESOME! ... Giving you all the more appreciation for a franchise as a whole... heck, as an example; look at the Batman franchise...

... I've lost count of all the various incarnations, and that is just some of the animated stuff.  Or the Star Trek franchise... Or...

But I digress...

To Jessica:

Congrats on the kick ass gig, and rockin' it the way you do!!!  (:

... you (reader) can find out lots more about Jessica Borutski and her various achievements from an interview over at Canadian Animation Resources

... as well as a TV interview on CBC's The National

More of the Borutski media avalanche here, here, and here... and, of course, you can read more on Jessica's blog here:

In her spare time, over the last 4.5 years, Jessica continues work on her next short: "The Good Little Bunny with Big Bad Teeth" (which she hopes to have done this August).

Jessica was probably best well known for her 2005 Flash short: "I Like Pandas"

Keep Rockin!!
